Joni and Albulena’s story

Albulena awoke feeling ill during her sixth month of pregnancy. She didn’t realize that her stomach ache was actually labor. By the time she got to the hospital, it was too late to stop her preterm labor. Her son, Joni, was born 10 weeks early, weighing less than a kilo.

Five years ago in Kosovo, Joni would have had virtually no chance of survival. But Joni received treatment with Survanta, a medication that promotes lung development, and treatment with CPAP, a machine that helps bring oxygen to the lungs. Today, he is home with his parents and big brother. He’s just gotten his first tooth, and is learning to crawl.
