People living with Type 1 diabetes and their families will share their personal experiences with the public on Tuesday, October 20, at Kafe Llafe, an event organized by Action for Mothers and Children (AMC), in partnership with Tip1omël, at Zahir Pajaziti Square.
The event will begin with a news conference from 15:00 to 15:30, followed by a Living Library from 15:30 to 18:00. Unlike a traditional library, where visitors borrow books, a Living Library invites visitors to engage directly with individuals who share their personal stories. At Kafe Llafe, participants will discuss their experiences living with Type 1 diabetes or caring for a family member with the condition.
The event is free and open to the public and will take place rain or shine.
Kafe Llafe is part of an ongoing advocacy campaign by AMC and Tip1omël calling on Kosovo’s government to ensure access to continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and insulin pumps for children living with Type 1 diabetes. These devices can make managing Type 1 diabetes easier and safer, but many families in Kosovo cannot afford them.
Frequent finger-pricks, multiple daily injections and constant monitoring can make life exhausting and painful. For parents of children with Type 1 diabetes, the ongoing fear of sudden health crises can affect every aspect of daily life, including their ability to work and care for their families.
CGMs provide continuous glucose readings and can alert users to dangerous blood sugar levels, while insulin pumps deliver insulin throughout the day. These technologies can improve glucose control and help reduce the risk of severe hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar). Maintaining healthy glucose levels over time can also reduce the risk of serious complications, including heart disease, kidney, eye and nerve damage.
AMC and Tip1omël have launched a public petition calling for improved access to these essential technologies. The petition has already gathered more than 2,250 signatures. Members of the public will have an opportunity to learn more about the campaign and sign the petition during the event.
Through Kafe Llafe, the organizers hope to encourage greater understanding of Type 1 diabetes, challenge misconceptions about the condition and build public support for policies that would improve the lives of children and families affected by it.
