For the eighth year, the Albanian community in Zurich has supported the organization Action for Mothers and Children (AMC) to expand access to life-saving healthcare services for women and children across Kosovo.
“For three years now, I have been very proud to have the opportunity to help my country, Kosovo. At the end of every year, my father has asked us how much we earned from the companies that we, as his children, lead, and how much we can set aside for our country. My father’s encouragement was the primary reason I started supporting Action for Mothers and Children,” said Liridona Makica, Friend of the Foundation of AMC.
Guests gathered on April 17 at Restaurant Lago, on the shores of Lake Zurich, for an evening of music and empowering stories that reminded us how access to knowledge and health support can transform the lives of families.
We were pleased to have important participants and representatives of institutions in Switzerland at the event, such as the Consul of the Consulate of Kosovo in Switzerland, Mr. Vigan Berisha. Ms. Besa Vardari, a mother of two children born prematurely, also spoke about the impact of AMC’s programs; both of her children benefited from AMC’s donation of the medication Surfactant, as well as advice on successful breastfeeding.
“After the birth of my second child, we stayed in intensive care in the Neonatology Unit for a month. It was a difficult period. One of the biggest challenges for me was breastfeeding. Without the baby’s direct latch, I risked losing my breast milk supply. At that moment, I sought help. Through AMC, I received the right information, learned about skin-to-skin contact and the use of a pump, and this helped me continue breastfeeding. Today, I feel proud that I have also been able to share this experience with other mothers,” said Vardari.
The funds raised from this event will support AMC’s Mother’s Classes, which provide free education and counseling for pregnant women and new parents in 17 municipalities. Covering topics such as pregnancy, childbirth, mental health, breastfeeding, and infant care, this program provides families with the necessary knowledge to give their children a healthy start. During 2025, 5,167 participants benefited from this program, while in 2025 alone, in the first quarter of 2026 – 1,547 parents were part of these sessions.
The support of the Kosovo diaspora in Switzerland this year is the fruit of successful work and the real impact of AMC’s efforts. Donations from “Save a Life” 2025 and other fundraising initiatives enabled AMC to provide insulin pumps and monitoring equipment for two years for 10 children living with Type 1 Diabetes – a chronic condition that requires constant care.
This equipment stabilizes blood glucose levels, reduces the number of injections, and allows children to lead more active and independent lives, while simultaneously easing the burden on their families.
Emi Uka, whose son, Siar, received an insulin pump through AMC, stated in a video message: “Before we received the pump – which Siar has now thanks to AMC and their donors – it was very difficult for us to go out like other families without children with diabetes. Today, Siar can go out on his own… I wish every child with diabetes had a pump, because a pump is not a luxury; it is a vital tool.”
Together with its supporters in the diaspora, AMC is transforming solidarity into sustainable improvements in health and well-being for families throughout Kosovo.
