‘Surfactant’ medicament in the amount of $ 84,260 was donated today at UCCK

Today at the Neonatology Clinic, at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo, the delivery of Surfactant medicine, donation made possible through successful cooperation
and ongoing between Mothers for Children Action and the international organization AmeriCares. The donation amount with “Survanta” is a total of 220 bottles or in monetary value $ 84,260.00. This quantity simultaneously covers the annual supply need with this life-saving medicine. Babies who experience breathing problems are deficient in surfactant – layer fluid inside the lungs. Babies usually do not start producing surfactant for several weeks after birth. Without sufficient amounts of surfactant it leads to lung collapse and infants premature can not breathe.

 

Therefore, Surfactant is essential in prevention and treatment of RDS (Respiratory Distress Syndrome) and reduces the mortality rate of caused by RDS. Over the past 10 years, Surfactant donations have saved lives of more than 6000 premature with low birth weight babies in Kosovo.
