From a Fragile Start to a Bright Childhood: Mjalta, Our Little Fighter

For years, Haxhere Gashi dreamed of becoming a mother. After a long journey, her dream finally came true when she found out she was expecting twins — a baby boy and a baby girl. The joy in her heart was indescribable.

But life had other plans. Her twins were born prematurely, and while her baby boy sadly did not survive, little Mjalta came into the world fighting for her life. From her very first breath, she faced unimaginable challenges.

At the Neonatology Clinic in Pristina, Mjalta was given a chance at survival. She received a life-saving dose of Survanta, spent an entire month in an incubator, and was carefully treated with oxygen therapy, respiratory support, CPAP, phototherapy, and regular screenings for her fragile eyes. Every day was a battle — and every small sign of progress felt like a miracle.

Thanks to the dedication of the Neonatology staff, and the support of Action for Mothers and Children, which provided essential medicines and equipment, Mjalta grew stronger day by day. Her mother, Haxhere, never forgot the kindness and care that surrounded her daughter during those critical moments:
“Without the support and equipment made possible by AMC, I don’t know if my daughter would be here today. I will always be grateful to the doctors, nurses, and everyone who gave Mjalta the chance to live.”

Today, Mjalta is 6 and a half years old — a bright, healthy, and joyful girl who fills her home with laughter. She loves spending time with her close-knit family, and her life is a living reminder of hope, resilience, and the power of care.

Mjalta’s story is not just her own — it is the story of every premature baby in Kosovo who deserves the chance to grow, thrive, and live a full life.
