Approximately €550,000 worth of medications for the treatment of type 2 diabetes – Action for Mothers and Children and Americares support people with type 2 diabetes at the Endocrinology Clinic

Pristina, February 26, 2025 – Action for Mothers and Children (AMC), in collaboration with the international organization Americares, has donated a vital shipment of medications worth approximately €550,000 for the treatment and management of type 2 diabetes. This donation is dedicated to the Endocrinology Clinic at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo (UCCK). It represents a significant step toward improving healthcare services for diabetes patients in Kosovo.

Diabetes in Kosovo – A Major Health Challenge

Type 2 diabetes is the most prevalent form of diabetes, accounting for approximately 95% of all cases and significantly affecting patients’ quality of life. This condition arises when the body either does not produce enough insulin or the cells become insulin-resistant, leading to elevated blood glucose levels. Type 2 diabetes primarily develops in adults.

The number of diabetes patients is continuously increasing due to various factors, including a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating habits, and a lack of physical activity. This trend poses a major challenge to the country’s healthcare system, which often struggles with limited medical infrastructure capacity.

According to data from the National Institute of Public Health of Kosovo, in 2022 alone, 7,302 new cases of type 2 diabetes were registered, with 4,475 cases among women and 2,827 among men.

Impact of the Donation on Diabetes Patients’ Lives

The donation provided by AMC and Americares includes a substantial supply of essential medications for managing blood glucose levels and preventing severe diabetes-related complications. This contribution will significantly improve the lives of hospitalized patients by ensuring safe and high-quality treatment.

By reducing the shortage of medications in hospitals, this donation also facilitates the work of healthcare professionals, enabling them to deliver more effective services and higher-quality treatments to patients. It will contribute to improving the overall quality of healthcare and reducing diabetes-related complications that often require costly medical interventions.

This donation is essential for patients with type 2 diabetes, especially given the increasing number of people affected by this disease. We are extremely grateful and appreciative of this invaluable support,” said Mrs. Afërdita Kukaj, Head Nurse at the Endocrinology Clinic.
