Action for Mothers and Children and its Partners Bring New Hope for Children with Type 1 Diabetes
06.03.2025
Ten children with Type 1 diabetes receive insulin pumps and one-year supply of essential materials for a better life!
Pristina, March 6, 2025 – Action for Mothers and Children (AMC) has marked a historic milestone in efforts to improve the treatment of children with Type 1 diabetes in Kosovo. For the first time, AMC has donated 10 insulin pumps to 10 children at the Pediatric and Endocrinology Clinic, a vital donation worth over €33,000, which also includes a one-year supply of essential materials.
Insulin pumps represent a significant step toward improving the quality of treatment and well-being of young patients.
This initiative is the result of the awareness campaign “Diabetes Does Not Stop Dreams”, carried out in partnership with Rugove Corporation as the main donor and with the support of Ms. Burbuqe Pacarada, who, through her unique skydiving initiative “To the Sky for Mothers and Children”, raised funds for this cause. Additionally, the sponsors of the 8th edition of the philanthropic event “Let’s Dance” played a crucial role in supporting this initiative.
Statements from the Press Conference
The press conference was opened by Rina Demiri Spahija, Executive Director of AMC, who emphasized the importance of this donation:
“We are very happy and proud to have made this donation possible for children with diabetes. The health of children is a priority for AMC, and we will continue to support initiatives that facilitate their treatment and care.”
She further added:
“This donation is an important step, but not enough to address the needs of hundreds of children who continuously struggle to secure adequate treatment. Insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors are essential devices that significantly improve the quality of life for children with Type 1 diabetes. Therefore, we will advocate for the inclusion of these devices in the essential medicines and medical equipment list of the public healthcare system, ensuring that every child has access to necessary treatment, regardless of financial circumstances.”
Following her, Dr. Violeta Grajqevci, Director of the Pediatric Clinic, highlighted the importance of insulin pumps:
“These pumps are very precise and easy to use. We hope they will play a major role in improving the quality of life for children with diabetes. This is a significant contribution to public health, and we deeply appreciate this act.”
For over a decade, Action for Mothers and Children has been at the forefront of efforts to improve healthcare services for mothers and children in Kosovo by providing medical equipment and medications to the Gynecology, Neonatology, and Pediatrics Clinics, as well as implementing health programs with a lasting impact on the healthcare system.
According to data from the National Institute of Public Health of Kosovo (IKSHPK), there are currently 2,455 registered individuals with Type 1 diabetes in Kosovo, with approximately 40 new children diagnosed each year. The Pediatric and Endocrinology Clinic currently treats over 500 children with diabetes, yet their needs remain unmet due to the lack of essential equipment for disease management.
Lisa Mehmeti, a Type 1 diabetes patient and founder of the Tip1omël organization, shared her experience:
“The insulin pump has allowed me to manage my diabetes accurately and with greater flexibility, helping me maintain stable glucose levels and minimize extreme fluctuations. I started using CGM years after getting my insulin pump, which I first received at the Pediatric Clinic when I was six years old. My experience confirms that insulin pumps, even when not connected to CGM, are an excellent tool for managing diabetes and improving quality of life.”
Young Jara Hasolli, a patient at the Pediatric Clinic, expressed her joy:
“I am so happy to receive an insulin pump from Action for Mothers and Children because I am a very active child. Thank you so much!”
Medical Professionals’ Support
In closing, Merita Emini Sadiku, Director of the Endocrinology Clinic, expressed her gratitude for this initiative:
“Insulin pumps are essential for children with diabetes, playing a key role in improving disease management. This donation represents an important step in caring for our patients, including adults who were once pediatric patients. We are deeply grateful to AMC and all contributors who made this life-changing donation possible.”
Additionally, Dr. Hafize Rafuna, Specialist at the Endocrinology Clinic, emphasized the importance of this contribution:
“This donation has a direct impact on easing the management of Type 1 diabetes for our patients. We thank AMC and all supporters for this valuable assistance, which will significantly improve the quality of life for children with diabetes.”
Enhancing Pediatric Clinic Facilities
As part of this initiative, the “Recreation Room” at the Pediatric Clinic was also inaugurated—a project supported in collaboration with donor Hyperactive, aimed at creating a warmer and more comfortable environment for children during their treatment.
Action for Mothers and Children (AMC) and its partners will continue to support institutions in this cause and work toward long-term solutions to ensure continuous and quality treatment for these young patients.
